AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

Dynamic Team With Proficiency in Basic Life Support Care.
ACLS is based on simulated clinical scenarios that encourage active, hand-on participation through learning stations where participants will practice essential skills individually, as part of a team, and as team leader. Realistic simulations reinforce the following key concepts: proficiency in basic life support care; recognizing and initiating early management of peri-arrest conditions; managing
cardiac arrest; identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes; recognizing other life-threatening clinical situations (such as stroke) and providing initial care; ACLS
algorithms; and effective resuscitation team dynamics.
Course Objective
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) refers to a set of clinical interventions for the urgent
treatment of cardiac arrest and other life threatening medical emergencies, as well as the knowledge and skills to deploy those interventions.
Extensive medical knowledge and rigorous hands-on training and practice are required to master ACLS. Only qualified health care providers (e.g. physicians, paramedics, nurses, respiratory therapists, clinical pharmacists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other specially trained
health care providers) can provide ACLS, as it requires the ability to manage the patient airway, initiate IV access, read and interpret electrocardiograms, and understand emergency pharmacology. Some health professionals, or even lay rescuers, may be trained in basic life support (BLS), especially
cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR. When a sudden cardiac arrest occurs, immediate CPR is a vital link in the chain of survival. Another important link is early defibrillation, which has improved greatly
with the widespread availability of AEDs.
Course Content
In the classroom, students participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations. Students work with an AHA ACLS Instructor to complete ACLS skills practice and skills testing. Students also must complete a written exam. At the end of this course the participant who is successful will be given AHA Certification Card of successful completion. Those who failed will undergo immediate remediation. Those who failed this remediation can come back in the future to re-sit the test.
